Though the past two years have proved challenging in myriad ways for everyone, we were fortunate enough this year to be able to continue some of our programs without interruption, resume others we had to skip last year, and lay the groundwork for some exciting new opportunities! Some of our accomplishments:

2021 DOUG ODELL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM:

FLG ScholarshipRecipients 2021

This year marked the inaugural year of the Doug Odell Scholarship. Named in honor of one of FLG’s founding members, the $1000 scholarships were established to encourage and support our local community and are awarded to a graduating senior in good standing from Blue Ridge Early College (BREC) to promote higher education in the field of Science.

Realtor Rick Jackson (Silver Creek Realty, Glenville Office) and his wife Lisa generously provided the initial funding for the Scholarship Program. A matching donation allowed FLG to award this year’s scholarship to two recipients instead of just one!

The applicants to our first-ever scholarship program truly represented the best and the brightest in our area, but in the end, two recipients were chosen: Devin Bryson & Brenda Rodriguez-Vargas.

Equinox logo

2021 marked the inaugural year of our partnership with Equinox Environmental. Recommended by Dr. Kimberly Hall at Western Carolina University, Equinox is an Asheville-based company with commercial capabilities to meet FLG’s needs. As part of this agreement, Equinox will:

  • Test the six (6) major streams & creeks that are tributaries into Lake Glenville
  • Provide analysis of the water testing results compared to prior tests and trend analysis for more than ten (10) key parameters traditionally used to determine water quality
  • Compare results to established water quality standards.
  • Provide analysis and reporting on data collected from Lake Glenville using a multiparameter Sonde device.

What a great day we had on the water during our annual FLG Lake Clean Up on Saturday, June 5, 2021! With the support of Signal Ridge, Mountain View, and Lake Shore Marinas, and more than 75 community volunteers, we were able to remove a huge array of flotsam, jetsam, and other trash, including: 48 Dock Floats, Plastic and Teak Chairs, Fences, Water Toys (tubes and noodles), Solo Cups, Floating Logs and Sticks amongst other various items. FIREWORKS OVER LAKE GLENVILLE:

Saturday, July 3rd, 2021, marked FLG's 24th annual Fireworks Over Lake Glenville, and it couldn't have been a bigger success. The weather cooperated and the crowds on both land and the water thrilled at being part of this on-going tradition.

We'd like to offer our sincerest thanks to our generous Sponsors and Contributors who help Friends of Lake Glenville make this event happen, as well as our Fireworks Committee Chairman, R. Denny Smith, who works with the fireworks company, the Cashiers Glenville Fire Department, The Pointe HOA , and Jackson County offices to co-ordinate all the details and put it together.

If you missed it, you can see live footage of it here!

SOCIAL CALENDAR:

After surveying our membership to determine everyone’s comfort level, we were ecstatic to be able to offer a limited number of safe opportunities for us all to gather, see familiar faces, meet new ones, and generally enjoy the camaraderie of our fellow lake neighbors and supporters. The season culminated in a blowout event at the all-new Happ’s Place, and we simply can’t wait to do it again next year!

MEMBERSHIP:

After a year of uncertainty, in which many people couldn’t travel to our beautiful area, our membership rebounded with great success! We were pleased to welcome back our returning members, encouraged by the number of you who joined our Metallic Circle by upgrading your membership to a higher level, and thrilled to welcome more than 50 first-time ever members to our FLG family!

OUR SINCERE THANKS & GRATITUDE:

We simply could not accomplish our core mission to Preserve and Protect Lake Glenville without the financial support of our faithful sponsors and supporters. Our sincere thanks goes out to: Glenville Lake Club, Glenville Sawmill, Ingles, Lake Glenville Scenic Waterfall Cruises, Lakeshore Marina, Landmark Realty Group, Midgard Self-Storage, Mountain Man Caves, Mountain View Marine, Sawyer Family Farmstead, Signal Ridge Marina, Silver Creek Real Estate Group, Southern Appalachia Lawn Care, Trillium, and Whiteside Brewing.
